Here's a quick breakdown of the 2007 CIFFL Championship game between the San Diego Sammies and the Chicago Irish. Quarterback The Sammies' attack is led by Tom Brady, the highest point scorer in the CIFFL this season. Brady will play at least a half, possible three quarters. He should score at least two TDs, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see three. He's going to try and bury the Giants early. The Irish have QB issues. Tony Romo, who's had a stellar season, is banged up, missing his main target in TO and playing in a game that means nothing. Romo could play a half. He might just play a quarter. If he smacks his hand on somebody's helmet, he could be gone in the first series. Clearly the Irish need to look at other choices, unfortunately the Irish's back up is Eli Manning, who's playing in a meaningless game (Get used to that phrase, you'll see it here prominently.) Manning is reportedly getting extensive time on Sunday, but it's not clear how much his main target, Plaxico Burress, will play. Manning is a huge risk, who has even less upside than Romo at this point. The Irish also picked up Chris Redman. Thank you for the dollar. He might get the call here and since we don't subtract points for INTs, he's not a completely terrible choice, but he's close. Downey's doing what he can with what he has, but that's not much in the QB department right now. Advantage--Clearly the Sammies Running Back 1 The Sammies RB1 is Joseph Addai, but he's not looking good this week. He's playing in a meaningless game, and I doubt he'll go more than a quarter. Plus, the Titans can play some run D as long as Albert Haynesworth is on the field to jam up the middle. The Irish have a great player in a bad situation. LT is the best back in football, and the once-proud-franchise known as the Raiders are capable of getting seriously killed on the ground. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Chargers are in the playoffs and LT is their franchise. He likely won't go much more than a quarter or two at the most. RBs tend to do more damage late in games when defenses are worn down, and that's not going to happen for Tomlinson because he's going to be on the bench by then. Still, he should get at least one score here, maybe two. If he played all game long he could put up some big numbers, but that's not going to happen, as he will be rested for the playoffs. Advantage--Irish Running Back 2 The Sammies feature Marshawn Lynch at RB 2 and the rookie has had a pretty nice season. Only Purple Jesus aka Adrian Peterson, has had a better year as a rookie TB. The Eagles aren't easy to run on, but Lynch should get close to 100 hundred yards and he's a better than even money bet to score a TD. The Irish are rolling with Kevin Falk at RB2. Everybody else scores on the Pats, so why not Falk? Perhaps because he hasn't done so very often this season. Touch Down distribution by osmosis is not the kind of voodoo science I want to be a part of, thanks. Advantage--Sammies Wide Receiver 1 Randy Moss is back and the Sammies have used his huge performance in 2007 to get to the championship game. Moss won't play the whole game, but he'll stick around long enough to get at least 1 TD, maybe 2. The Irish couldn't pass on a WR named Fitzgerald, and it's worked out well for them. Fitz has had some big games and gets a lot of catches. However, he's given up plenty of TDs to Anqaun Boldin, and there's the chance that happens again on Sunday. Fitz has a great match up against the Rams, and should play the entire game Advantage--Sammies, but only slightly Wide Receiver 2 Speaking of Anquan Boldin, the Sammies have him at WR 2 and he's been a solid player. He's got a great match up on Sunday against the Rams and should go the whole game, though he has played through some recent injury issues. Who scores for the Cards will depend on what--if any--pass defense the Rams deploy. The Irish are rolling with rookie Dwayne Bowe, who's showed a knack for getting into the end zone. He's not a bad choice here, but his QB, Brodie Croyle, is dinged. Bowe is great red zone target, but this match up clearly favors the Cards passing attack. Advantage--Sammies Wide Receiver 3 The Sammies are going with Armani Toomer in a game that means little for the G men. With Burress hurting and Shockey gone for the year, somebody's going to have to step up for the Giant, and it could very well be Toomer, but the prospect of Jared Lorenzen playing half the game doesn't help his chances. Dennis Northcutt has proved serviceable for the Jags, but he's no Reggie Williams, who's is now clearly the Jags WR1. Northcutt is more of a possession-type WR, so don't look for the big play. Also, this game means exactly shit to the Jaguars, so it's hard to tell how much the first stringers will play. Tight End The Sammies are playing Bears rookie Greg Olsen, who's got that great pedigree from the U. The Bears have been running plays specifically for Olsen, and that's a good sign. He did seem more productive with Brian Griese at QB, but he's not a bad choice here. The Irish feature uber stud Antonio Gates at TE, and he's paid off for them all season long. However, there are several things working against Gates here. He's been dinged up and may not play much, as the Chargers should be able to put the Raiders away early. Phillip Rivers is turning out to be a country-fried buster. He's sporadic at QB and has had some truly bad games lately. Advantage--It's basically a push, but Gates is a great player and has the potential to score on pretty well every play. We'll give this one to the Irish. Kicker Uhmm, pull them out of hat for all I care. Neither is truly great, and neither is terrible. Gratkowski might trail only because he'll be kicking PAT's instead of field goals. Advantage Irish. Defense The Sammies are looking for the Chargers to make things happen--Antonio Cromartie to the house, anyone? They get a great match up against rookie QB JaMarcus Russell. He might be hard to catch, but there's an excellent chance he makes some bad choices with the ball. The Irish will roll with Cards against the Rams, and there's no reason not to like that. St. Louis has given up plenty of turnovers, and their offensive line has basically killed the Rams offensive stars this year, If you don't believe me, ask Mailman. Advantage Sammies Summary The Irish need everything to go their way, and the week 17 match ups are not helping. Not having a full game of LT hurts terribly, and questions at QB are not what they need if they're trying to get past San Diego. Amie's had the best team all year--no changes here. San Diego is my pick to be your 2007 CIFFL Champions.

LOL-- No hard feelings. It's far from a perfect world. And I don't mean to offer this up as an excuse in any way, but I've got to say it for the record. Week 17 is far and away the most difficult week to try and figure out. It's hard enough to try and predict performance in today's NFL, but when you factor in whether or not each team is actually going to try and play to win it becomes pretty close to impossible. Still, I thought I'd give it a spin. Lots of football left.

Actually, I'm working on a little sumthin' sumthin' that would let all teams participate--in some way--for all 17 weeks. It probably won't get too far, but it's worth a shot--and a beer.
