Today is the last day that the media has full access to the players and coaches. I'll toss out some questions that have been submitted through the league, then open it up for the rest of the media: (FOR STUART) Steve Strom is known for his "hands off" coaching style. The Allan brothers are known for almost over-managing their teams. You're somewhere in between. Talk a little about how your coaching strategy this year got you to the championship game. (FOR RYANS) Did you guys become friends at the Delta Chi fraternity in part because you both have the same first name? (BOTH COACHES) This Krohn Bowl, for the first time, doesn't include a team that finished the year ranked in the top 3 in scoring. Do you agree with the assessment that, on paper, this is the worst championship game ever? (FOR STUART) You made an intriguing waiver claim this week, signing Kolby Smith to a $9 contract just 28 hours before the start of the game. How does Smith fit into your team's offense? (FOR RYANS) If your team wins the Krohn Bowl, which player will you honor with placement on the league trophy? (FOR STUART) You've been criticized for your support of UW football coach Tyrone Willingham. Why do you feel it's the right move to bring him back for a fourth season? (FOR RYANS) You've got two of the league's top 5 quarterbacks: Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. Has it been difficult managing a team with two players of that caliber? Did you consider trading one of them? And which one will start on Sunday? (FOR STUART) Walk us through, just one more time, your decision to sign Mason Crosby to a free-agent deal, then use him in that week 15 playoff game. (FOR RYANS) Running back has been a sore spot for your team for much of the year. Aaron Stecker came through with two touchdowns for you last week, but now Reggie Bush likely will back. So who will you use at that position in this game? (FOR STUART) If the DFL goes to three four-team divisions next year, what teams do you feel should be in your division? (FOR RYANS) One of the biggest moves of this year came when you traded away Terrell Owens to get Larry Johnson. Looking back, do you regret that trade? more questions to follow ...

FOR STUART Controversial decision to leave McGahee at the alter. Here's a guy you purchased at the auction who's started a lot of game and scored a lot of touchdowns. Donner Pass needs running backs. Any worry that Donner Pass will pick up McGahee and use him in this game?

|
Do I not understand the rules? My understanding is that Donner Pass cannot pick up McGahee for the Krohn Bowl as players who are waived are "locked" for that week.

For all of the other weeks of the DFL season, guys are locked until the following week, to allow everyone to have a fair shot at them. But for this week, there are only two teams left, so "counter-punch" pickups seem to be reasonable. If McGahee isn't on your team, it seems reasonable that Donner Pass should be able to pick him up if they wish.

I do not think it is reasonable to change the rules less than 24 hours before kickoff. Had GRK known of this sudden rule change, he likely would not have cut McGahee. If McGahee is picked up, starts and scores, Krohn Bowl XLVCLVII will be forever tainted. -Stuart The GRK: Rules are changed by vote, not whim.

That seems reasonable to Donner Pass. We are thinking about dropping the powerful and sleek Kevin Curtis and fear he may land in GRK's hands, though...

(FOR STUART) Steve Strom is known for his "hands off" coaching style. The Allan brothers are known for almost over-managing their teams. You're somewhere in between. Talk a little about how your coaching strategy this year got you to the championship game. First off, I would not use a qualifier. The Allan brothers do over-manage their teams. I have had the most success when I coach true to the roots of the GRK. For example, this year I drafted Randy Moss for no reason other than the fact he's a punk. And I drafted Marshawn Lynch only because he drove a golf cart on the Memorial Stadium turf last year after his Cal Bears barely beat the feeble Carl Bonnell-led Huskies in overtime. And Willis McGahee? Well, he went to the University of Miami. 'Nuf said. This year, I also successfully employed the strategery of picking players off waivers who their coaches waived way too prematurely, such as Ben Roethlisberger and Marques Colston. Of course, I was the one who waived Colston prematurely, but you get my drift. And then there's the story behind the brilliant Mason Crosby pick-up, which I won't regale you with again unless of course you insist. (BOTH COACHES) This Krohn Bowl, for the first time, doesn't include a team that finished the year ranked in the top 3 in scoring. Do you agree with the assessment that, on paper, this is the worst championship game ever? On the contrary, I would say this is a very exciting Krohn Bowl. The GRK go into the game as winners of eight in a row. That's impressive! And Donner Pass goes in with arguably the sorriest excuse of a roster of any Krohn Bowl participant in DFL history. That's impressive, too, I guess, in its own kind of weird way. On paper, the GRK should win this game handily. But Donner Pass has shown tremendous resiliency in spite of the Ryans making poor player personnel decisions during the draft and throughout the year. In terms of Krohn Bowls in the past that have been worse than this one, I would say any that featured the Hutton Headhunters, since they involved only one participant. (FOR STUART) You made an intriguing waiver claim this week, signing Kolby Smith to a $9 contract just 28 hours before the start of the game. How does Smith fit into your team's offense? He doesn't. And now he doesn't fit in the Donner Pass offense either. (FOR STUART) You've been criticized for your support of UW football coach Tyrone Willingham. Why do you feel it's the right move to bring him back for a fourth season? Coach Willingham, if I am correct, is a maker of young men who compete to be competitors. (FOR STUART) Walk us through, just one more time, your decision to sign Mason Crosby to a free-agent deal, then use him in that week 15 playoff game. Oh, if you insist. Well, see, since I all but clinched the playoffs fairly early in the year, I had the luxury of looking ahead to matchups in Weeks 14, 15 and 16, thereby molding my roster not for a playoff run, but for the playoffs themselves. I saw that in Week 15, Jeff Reed would be playing Jacksonville in Pittsburgh, where the average temperature on Dec. 16 is "fucking cold," according to www.weather.com. So I needed to find another kicker to substitute for Reed in Week 15. That's when I found Crosby available on waivers. Imagine my surprise when I discovered him on the list of free agent kickers -- especially since I had never heard of the guy. With Crosby kicking in a domed stadium against the Rams, he had to be my guy. And we all saw how brilliant that move turned out to be for the GRK. Certainly, a stroke of coaching genius. At the very least. You also will notice that this week, I will be returning to Reed, who is kicking in that same, lovely domed stadium in St. Louis, while Crosby is in Chicago, where the forecast for Sunday, according to www.weather.com is 22 degrees and 17 mph winds ... inland! (FOR STUART) If the DFL goes to three four-team divisions next year, what teams do you feel should be in your division? Wow. That's easy. I mean, every upper-tier coach would say the same thing. We'd want the three worst franchises in the DFL to join us in our division: Springfield, South King County and Spokane.

(FOR RYANS) Did you guys become friends at the Delta Chi fraternity in part because you both have the same first name? --Yes. We Ryan's like to stick together (there were a total of 7 Ryans in Delta Chi at one point). BOTH COACHES) This Krohn Bowl, for the first time, doesn't include a team that finished the year ranked in the top 3 in scoring. Do you agree with the assessment that, on paper, this is the worst championship game ever? --I can speak for both Ryans in that we are absolutely shocked to be in this game. We did go 2-0 against a writer of a fantasy football magazine and 4-2 against the BIG 3, so I guess that gave us some confidence that we can play in big games. We also won a must win in week 13 for the division championship. Sure we don't put on a show like some of the other franchises, but we get the job done. Can't speak to the GRK, I'm sure they are a fine and deserving team and worthy of the esteemed Krohn Bowl stature. (FOR RYANS) If your team wins the Krohn Bowl, which player will you honor with placement on the league trophy? --Good question... probably one of the 2 guys who started every game they were available: the "X-Factor" Heath Miller or "Mr. Consistent" Nick Folk. (FOR RYANS) You've got two of the league's top 5 quarterbacks: Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. Has it been difficult managing a team with two players of that caliber? Did you consider trading one of them? And which one will start on Sunday? --We are proud to have 2 of the greatest qb's of all time on our roster. We were confident starting either one of our studs any week. Never considered trading them. Sunday will be a game time decision... they may alternate series. (FOR RYANS) Running back has been a sore spot for your team for much of the year. Aaron Stecker came through with two touchdowns for you last week, but now Reggie Bush likely will back. So who will you use at that position in this game? --Once again, game time decision. So many studs (Morris, Jones, Stecker, LJ, Walker) it makes it difficult to decide. Rest assured whoever is in there will test the GRK front seven. (FOR RYANS) One of the biggest moves of this year came when you traded away Terrell Owens to get Larry Johnson. Looking back, do you regret that trade? --Can't live in the past. Every game LJ started for us he scored. Can't say that about too many players. We are happy with our team. We did lead the league in scoring last week without TO and LJ. So we're coming in hungry and ready to prove ourselves. Just another "must win" for Donner Pass.
