I'm back folks...Welcome to 2007...
Congratulations are in order to Dave Meyer and the Blazing Gunz as they won a close 104-91 game over the Chili Crashers to win their 2nd Stooges League Championship in three years. This was a very unusual game. The Crashers made a huge mistake by putting Deuce McAllister in their lineup even though he was declared inactive for the game. Putting in Corey Dillon their only other RB would have won them the title. The Crashers, though had the game in the bag, until the Gunz great move of starting the Green Bay Packers DEF and their clinching 22 points won them the title. Tremendous job Dave...
Great job by a number of teams this year...Brad Kreklau for getting to the title game, Chelli Spielvogel-Carey for dominating the league for most of the year. John Murray for also having a tremendous regular season. Carl Miller for regrouping late in the regular season to get into the playoffs and Kenny Weinstein for a solid year and a lot of points scored...
Dirtbag wins the final three weeks $100 prize, as he was actually the high scorer in the league each of the last three weeks...Quite an accomplishment.
I had a nice week off of work and some R&R to get me going for 2007...Dave...if you can send me a digital photo head shot and I'll post it on the SmartGuySports.com Hall of Champions...Each of the teams that have money owed to them I will be sending out an email and will set that up for you today...
New Year's Day is my favorite Day of the entire year...It's the day that I get up late...watch some college football...get bored, and start doing my final fantasy football roundups and cleanups for the year. The boredom hit me about noon today...So here's some final Stooges Business for the year...
The draft order for 2007 has been determined by our random dice rolls...here is the order:
#1: Special ED
#2: Blazing Gunz
#3: Richmond Brewzers
#4: Crescent City Gorillas
#5: Chili Crashers
#6: Shady Records
#7: The Crowbars
#8: H-Town Ruff Riders
#9: Bull 1983
#10: Socko's Revenge
#11: Mr Bo's Ass Ponies
#12: The Maneaters
This will give everyone a ton of stuff to think about in 2007...where and who can I pick in next year's draft. I hope that everyone enjoyed the year and I hope that everyone is coming back next year...I've got a couple of announcements to make on 2007. One...I have enlisted Dirtbag and my brother Brad into helping do recaps and stuff for their former leagues that I took on, which should free myself up for more of that in 2007. I know you guys all like that stuff and I'm going to try and accomodate as much as possible...
Secondly...I have decided that there are some rules changes that I would really like to incorporate into 2007 and beyond...I'm not a big fan of going crazy with rules changes, but there are a couple of items that I think definately need to be fixed in 2007. I'm going to spell them out here and if anyone has any comments, suggestions, or have some ideas of their own, then let's hear them...I'd like to get these decided on and posted soon. Thanks...
#1: Waivers...I really want to go to a blind bidding system that uses fake $100 to bid on free agents instead of using the worst-to-first method of picking up free agents. This really is the fairest and most equal system out there...but to make this work we need to move waivers from running on Wednesday night to running on Friday nights. This gives owners a longer week to decide who they want to bid on...First come, first serve will still be allowed the rest of the week. I realize that there are Thursday games in the NFL now, but teams have rosters that are deep enough and the bye weeks are not a part of those games, so some weeks there may be a game or two where waivers will run after those games.
#2: We need to boost up the scoring for DEF/ST's a bit in this league...I've tinkered with this over the years, but only giving points for sacks, turnovers, and TD's has not given the most accurate picture of these DEF's. In the past we have used a formula for awarding points to DEF/ST based on offensive points allowed...I would like to add this in for next year...here is the scoring for DEF's that I'm proposing...
#3: Missed Field Goals and PAT's...This is something that I have incorporated into a couple of my other leagues and I think it has worked out very well. It adds intrigue and suspense to kickers and games and creates equality among the positions. On each other position, QB/RB/WR/TE/DEF (proposed) they can all lose points based on bad performances. Except for kickers...so here is the formula that I propose:
#4: An overhaul of the format of the league, schedule, and prize payouts...This isn't as complicated as it seems, but it is based on one big change...We end our regular season in Week 13 an our playoffs end in Week 16 of the NFL season and not Week 17. I have agonized over this probably as much as anyone over the years, but it has become painfully obvious that at least half the NFL treats Week 17 like a preseason game. We can't have our championship decided in a Week that teams just don't play their starters. I've looked at a lot of other leagues and most everyone ends in Week 16. So I researched and the best way that I can come up to do this and to maintain our structure is the following:
We split the league into 2 Conferences each with two 3-team division. So that means there will be a total of 4 divisions with three teams each. That way each team plays it's division opponents twice and each other team in the league once in a 13 week schedule. Since we like to use the 2 team bye system this works out well...The top division champ in each conference will get the top seeds and the 1st round byes. The other two division champs will get Seeds #3 and #4. That leaves two wild card teams left. I would like to award these two to the teams with the next best record and abandon giving the final wild card to the top scoring team. Because we only have 3 teams in each division, every team has a 1 in 3 shot at winning the division and getting into the playoffs. These odds are very good, and I feel that the teams with the next best records should get those final wild cards. Our playoffs would then start in Week 14 and go through Week 16. In this format I have to spread the money around a bit differently so I propose we get rid of the final 3 Weeks $100 prize and go with this format for payouts:
League Champion: $250
Runner-Up: $100
Toilet Bowl Winner: $25
Conference Winners (2): $100
Division Winners (2): $75
Wild Card Teams (2): $50
I know this is a lot to digest, but really let me hear your thoughts...I've put a lot of work into coming up with these ideas to make the league better...Thanks a lot everyone...

Short and sweet...here's where things stand with two more to go... #1: The Maneaters (Division Champ) *Clinched Playoff spot...Virtually clinched division, clinched #1 seed #4: H-Town Ruff Riders (#1 Wild Card) *Clinched Playoff Spot The Division race between Blazing Gunz and Chili Crashers will go down to the final weekend of the season. The loser of that has to keep pace with others for the #5 spot in the wild card. It's going to get interesting down the stretch... |

Looking at the league as if the playoffs started this week: #1: H-Town Ruff Riders, 8-2 (1097 points: The top two teams in the league are clearly H-Town and the Maneaters and unfortunately for both they are in the same division. So one of these teams is probably going to get the top seed and the other is most likely going to fall all the way down to #4 and a 1st round matchup. For now these two are battling at the top. H-Town is led by the Eagles/Bears duos (McNabb/Westbrook) and (Grossman/Muhammed). Nice win over Special ED this week. #2: Blazing Gunz, 6-4 (988 points): Nobody seems to want to win the Curly Division so the Moe Division leader, the Gunz right now are looking at the 2nd seed. They are locked in a battle with the Chili Crashers right now at the top of that division after the big win over them this week. Drew Brees and Donald Driver put up big points for the Gunz this week. #3: Richmond Brewzers, 5-5 (966 points): The Brewzers are hanging onto this spot and the division lead after losing their 4th in a row this week against Socko's Revenge. The Curly Division totally up for grabs right now with three teams tied at 5-5 and one team at 4-6. Stallworth was a nice play this week but not enough for Carl Miller to stop the bleeding. #4: The Maneaters, 8-2 (1057 points): The race between H-Town and the Maneaters is going to be the best story in this league down the stretch as both teams battle for that division title and probable 1st round bye. The loser gets to face a team in the 1st round of the playoffs, never an easy thing. The Maneaters with an impressive win (3rd in a row) over Shady Records with Steve Smith and Chad Johnson the big stars this week. #5: Chili Crashers, 6-4 (933 points): The Crashers would love to crash the division champ party and possibly get that first round bye, but right now they need to regroup after flip-flopping the division lead with the Blazing Gunz this week. Cadillac Williams is just not getting the job done and maybe a change is in order. #6: Shady Records, 4-6 (1033 points): The last playoff spot goes to the team with the most points and right now the leader with a pretty decent margin is Shady Records. The have virtually no shot at the division and non at the #4 seed, so the best they can hope for is to maintain their points lead or try and overtake a bunch of 5-5 teams in front of them. #7: Bull 1983, 5-5 (946 points): Bull has turned his season around and has 3 wins in a row and has his eyes on the division, but right now his team is on the outside looking in at a playoff spot. A win this week over the Crowbars moved Bull up in the standings leap-frogged the Crowbars. Steven Jackson with a good game for Bull. #8: Crescent City Gorillas, 2-8 (935 points): The Gorillas have the worst record in the league, yet are only 100 points behind Shady Records for that spot in the playoffs. That's how crazy the year has been for the ol' Gorillas. Getting in on points is the Gorillas only way to make the playoffs now. They lost a tight one to Mr Bo's this week even though Colston again was putting up big numbers. #9: Socko's Revenge, 4-6 (900 points): The Suckster's have gotten themselves within one game of the division after a huge win over the Brewzers this past week. I emailed Carl on Monday night after Keyshawn Johnson scored to give me the win, and told me to "Blow Me". I'm not sure what that means, but I don't think the Brewzers were happy. Brady was the high scorer for Socko this week. #10: Mr Bo's Ass Ponies, 5-5 (882 points): This is a strange team and a strange owner. They have probably the best depth at QB in the league and probably the worst WR core in the league. They have not scored a ton of points, yet at 5-5 are a game out of the division lead. They are going to have to get in on record, so they needed the win they got over the Gorillas this week, pretty bad. #11: The Crowbars, 5-5 (855 points): This team has also somehow won 5 games this year, even though they have scored the 2nd fewest points in the league. They are tied for the division lead, and it's anyone's ball game the next 4 weeks. They really needed to pick up the win this week over hated Bull, but Delhommed couldn't do it by himself. #12: Special ED, 2-8 (852 points): This team is headed for the Toilet Bowl faster than Dirtbag after a Fiber Shake. Travis has pretty much no shot, although with Romo in tow this team might play spoiler to someone else down the stretch. Good luck everyone this week |
