Tokyo: 2nd appearance in Krohn Bowl. Previously lost to Wolverhampton in 2002. Tokyo has participated in nine DFL seasons but has never won the big prize.

Hutton: 5th Krohn Bowl appearance. Team is 2-2 in championship games. The Headhunters have been the league's winningest team over the last 10 years (82-53-2) but have appeared in only one Krohn Bowl during that run (the team beat Green River 56-18 back in 2001).

Commish,
I believe the GRK have played in only two Krohn Bowls, not three, losing to Boulder/Gainesville/Schenkre (to this day, the result has never been certified as official) and defeating Spokane. Have I just blocked out the Hutton loss to which you refer? I honestly have no such recollection of that Krohn Bowl -- and based on that score, I can understand why.
Regarding the 2006 Krohn Bowl: GO HUTTON!!!! (I'm hoping Gilmore can break GRK's record of futility before winning the big one. Crawford, of course, will eventually get there, but I prefer not to wait that long.)

The GRK: Paying attention again now that Wolverhampton has been eliminated.

We're getting old, because I have almost no recollection of a Hutton-Green River Krohn Bowl either. But league documents indicate the game did exist. All I remember was Strom breathing a sigh of relief, noting that had he lost the game, he would have replaced you as the league's biggest loser (Hutton hadn't won the thing since back in year 2).

Green River and Hutton both finished with 9-5 records.

Green River beat Butte and Hutton beat Bellevue in the semifinals.

Hutton won the championship game. Their big player that year was Marshall Faulk, who scored 21 TDs. Faulk went on the Krohn Bowl trophy. The previous year, Faulk had scored a then-record 26 TDs, also for Hutton. Hutton finished 2nd in scoring that year but didn't make the playoffs because of a tough schedule (team finished 7-7).

AND NOTE THIS: Hutton now is home to three of the top four scorers in DFL history:

2006 Tomlinson, 30+ TDs
2005 Alexander, 28 TDs
2004 Priest Holmes, 27 TDs (Wolverhampton)
2000 Faulk 26 TDs

So here's Strom's strategy. In mid-August, identify the running back that you feel will lead the NFL in touchdowns. Pay whatever it takes to land that player (all of the above guys had salaries over $45). Fill out the team with lower-priced scrubs. Sit back and hope the big-time back can carry said franchise to championship. It's been a damn effective model for him; he's won more games than anyone in the last decade. You might want to try this strategy next year.

The DFL: Where sloth / laziness (what Hutton refers to as "laissez-faire roster management") isn't one of the seven deadly sins.

Mr. Commissioner, didn't Hutton have both Terrell Davis and Jamal Anderson on its roster one year where they both had monster seasons? As I recall, for the first week of the DFL playoffs, both players were rested for much of the game by their NFL teams. As a result, Hutton was one and done.

I  just checked my notes. Davis ($35) and Anderson ($8) were two of the 11 players Hutton purchased in 1998. Team went 11-3, setting an all-time scoring record (578 points).

Lost to Tony Schenk's Butte Holes 42-31 in the playoffs.

BTW, if anybody is on eBay and sees a DFL auction results sheet from 2001 up for bid, let me know. It's the only auction sheet I'm missing.

I also need a 1987 draft sheet, but I don't know if there are any of those around. From memory, first round in 1987 was ...

1 Hanford (Tokyo) Dickerson
2 or 3 Tulsa  Roger Craig
2 or 3 Spokane,  Marcus Allen
4 Aberdeen, Walter Payton
5 Lewiston, Dan Marino. "No, wait. Can I switch to Dan Fouts? OK. Fouts then."
6 Belleve, Dan Marino
7 Ravenna, Ken O'Brien
8 Hutton, Jim Kelly

How did Joe Morris, who scored a league-high 21 TDs in the last pre-DFL season of the NFL, last until the first pick of the second round? Probaby because he was a white guy.

1987 still burns me up.

I had both Jim Kelly and John Elway on my roster, and every week I started the wrong guy. Literally every week.

Even Little Joe Morris wasn't enough to sneak Howdy / Hutton into the postseason.

So, you used to change your lineup?

I am more than willing to modify my starting lineup... the level of effort is within even my narrow band of acceptability.

What I am loathe to do is modify my roster... there are just too many players to follow. If my team sucks, it's because I am not doing a good job pushing the players on my existing roster to reach their full potential.

I can only wear one hat at a time: the GM hat at the auction, and the head coach's hat during the season.

Commish,
I *did* adopt Strom's strategy this year (and have in years past). I just picked the wrong guy (and have in years past).
Anyway ... Joe Morris is/was white?!?! Um, I think you're thinking of Phil McConkey.

The GRK: Jim Mora Jr. would be at the front of the frickin' line to coach the Killers.
