| EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith will be suspended for the season by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy a third time, according to two reports. CLEVELAND (AP) -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he crashed his motorcycle, two sources within the league told The Associated Press on Thursday, placing his 2005 season in doubt. ALLEN PARK, Mich. (April 25, 2005) -- The Detroit Lions released receiver Az-Zahir Hakim and free safety Brock Marion, and signed defensive tackle Brandon Kennedy to a one-year deal. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (May 11, 2005) -- The Baltimore Ravens released often-injured linebacker Peter Boulware to give the team some salary-cap relief. HOUSTON (May 18, 2005) -- Texans tight end Bennie Joppru could miss his third consecutive season after tearing a right knee ligament during an offseason practice. An MRI exam revealed that Joppru tore the anterior cruciate ligament in a workout May 16. The team said he will undergo surgery sometime in the next two weeks. There is no timetable for his return, though it generally takes players six to nine months to recuperate from such an injury. KIRKLAND, Wash. (April 29, 2005) -- Walter Jones did something different. For the first time in four years, Seattle's perennial Pro Bowl left tackle reported for a minicamp, where he stretched and took snaps with teammates. It's routine for most NFL players, but Jones has skipped minicamps and training camp for the previous three years after the Seahawks used their franchise player designation on him. "I'm glad to be back," said Jones, a five-time Pro Bowl performer. "I'm glad things got done and I'm glad to be back with the players. I'm enjoying it." It took years, but his agent finally worked out a long-term contract with the front office and Jones signed a seven-year deal in February. It meant Jones had to show up at the office, but he did it with a smile. "I'm very happy with the deal," he said. "I was happy when I signed it. All I've got to do now is come out and play, do my job." After Jones signed, Seattle placed its franchise tag on running back Shaun Alexander, who was a no-show and isn't expected to attend the six-day minicamp. It's not certain yet if he'll show up at training camp. "No advice for Shaun. Just when he decides to come in, be ready to play," Jones said. "It's a business, man. I don't try to step on anybody about their decisions. If that's his decision, just be prepared to play when he comes in." NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 18, 2005) -- Tennessee running back Chris Brown fractured his right hand during minicamp, an injury that will keep him out of the remaining May workouts but should allow him to be ready for training camp in late July. |
