Now that we are going to expand the rosters.... We need to decide exacly how we are going to do this. I'll toss out some options and please add some of your own or comment on them.

1. We expand the offseason draft to include the additional spots as rounds.
2. Instead of dropping players during the draft, we keep them.
3. Separate waiver day before/after draft to pickup roster spots.

I have no particular favorite as of yet, but I think the second option could turn out to be the most fair for everyone. It avoids issues with available current FA's, forcing owners to use draft picks , if they choose, to pick up vets and keeps things as they are now, while adding players we normally would during the draft.

I like option 1 the best...we could have 7 rounds instead of 4, with the last 3 being the ones used to expand the roster.  We could hold the last 3 rounds (expansion draft if you will) separately, so the owners could have time to peruse the players dropped by other teams...

True, but then that would require us to make the first 4 rounds as rookies only. If you recall last year, it was basically open to any FA. If we do it separately, lets do it before the draft, not after.

Why would the first four rounds be rookies only??

what about having the regular draft [4 picks] as usual, not dropping anyone and then have adraft a week or so before the season starts to draft other players and drop players if we desire to. this way we can better see who is hurt or burried on the depth charts and adjust accordingly.

Just the nature of the expansion. It was intended to expand out of the current FA pool. If we have 7 rounds all at once or without limits, then its just like expanding the draft by 3 spots. In that case, that next draft becomes a but watered down. I would rather see 3 before or after, than 7 all at once.

We could do that too... either before or after, it doesn't matter to me. I just don't like the idea of doing it all at once.

Isn't that what I suggested?? :-D

Have the first 4 rounds spread out over the summer for the regular draft, like last year, then right before the season starts have the last 3 rounds for the expansion draft...

Yeah... I think we are getting stuck in samantics again.... If its before... we know its a vet FA process. If its after.. it can be a mixture. I guess my point is that I would rather see it either be the regular 4 rounds.. with a single drop to the new level at the end, rather than 7 complete rounds with 3 drops. Or we do it before the draft and then do the draft as normal. My view on the request to expand was that it was centered on vet FA's.. and I suppose I am sticking to that. If we expand.. it should be vet FA's first or keeping those on your roster already instead of having to drop them during the draft.

Either way though.. we end up with the same numbers, its just the pool we can pick from that changes and the overall strategy.

Now I'm even more confused than normal....

Doing 4 rounds in August might cut it close on time but at least you would have time to maybe adjust for pre-season injuries.

In May, we are allowed to pick vets as well as rookies right?

Yes, the standard draft has been vets or rookies, your choice because everyone at that time is on the FA list.

Now last year, we did have waivers the week before the season started I *think* so now that we have 4 waiver transactions per week, you can make those adjustments then.

What do you think is the best way to manuver those 3 new spots into things Steve?? Before the draft.. which means only current FA's... During the draft, meaning you keep more of whats currently on your roster... or 3 additional rounds during the draft which could be either rooks or vets....

I prefer the last option, 3 additional rounds.. Can I suggest a way. How about 2 rounds in May,1 in June and July, 1 on August 15 and 2 starting the Friday of Labor Day. Those 2 rounds would let you cover injuries. Last year if we had last minute waivers I wasn't aware of it because I would have covered Gates blank spot in opener.
