Tiebreak Ends a Messy Postseason

The Syracuse Hebrew Nationals won a tiebreak over the Joliet Giants to capture the 2004 Hughes Bowl after the two teams tied at 79. Tony Gonzalez' points proved to be the difference in the first Hughes Bowl to ever end deadlocked.

The Ed Hughes Football League was founded by a group of University of Houston alumni as a basic scoring league with nine original franchises in 1980. Four of those franchises are still in the league and 9 of current 12 owners have been in the league for at least 15 seasons. After a season of weekly winner-take-all, we began using a head-to-head schedule in 1981. We are among the oldest continuous leagues in the U.S. Of the 12 current EHFL owners 7 live in the Houston area with the others in New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Florida and Maine. Bob Andrews has been the commish since the league was founded.

This league was named for the former Houston Oiler Head Coach Ed Hughes. Coach Hughes struggled through a 4-9-1 season with the Oilers in 1971 but he went on to jobs with the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. He earned a Super Bowl ring as offensive coordinator of the Bears in 1986 before retiring in 1990. Coach Ed Hughes died on June 23, 2000.
